Coates’s longest single composition and scored for a much larger orchestra than was usual for him. He recast the Seven Dwarfs ballet music, his wife coming up with a new scenario as well. In effect, it is a substantially different piece and is truly “enchanting”. Some even view it as his masterpiece. Whether or not that is the case, John Wilson and the BBC Concert Orchestra turn in a superb performance on another excellent collection of the composer’s less well-known works. ~ Liner notes on Chandos CD, 1988
